Key West and Lower Florida Keys Fly Fishing Report 09-01-2006

                                                        Falling Into Fish

With the dog days of summer coming to a close, we enter into the best time of the year to target a grand slam in the Lower Florida Keys. From early September until the first cold front of early December, we can count on consistent fishing for all the flats species.

The teenage tarpon are holding in great numbers everywhere right now. From hidden green rooms in the mangroves to open Oceanside flats, tarpon from ten to thirty pounds are biting aggressively in the mornings on floating patterns and un-weighted streamers.

Bonefishing on the Gulf side flats has been exceptional with the stable weather we have been experiencing. The first half of the incoming tides are bringing schools of six pound bonefish onto the flats where they feed steadily until mid-day.

The permit fishing has been very consistent. We are getting multiple shots on the last half of the incoming tide and bottom of the outgoing. If you have never waded for tailing permit, you have no idea what you are missing. A stealthy approach gets you within 20 to 30 feet and many times the permit tail literally at your feet.

Cheers, Capt. Greg Rahe
